Roblox is planning to roll out a stricter age-verification system for players who want to use in-game communication features. The process will combine facial recognition–based age estimation, government ID checks, and parental consent for younger users.
The update was outlined in a blog post by chief safety officer Matt Kaufman, who said these measures are designed to provide a far more reliable assessment of a player’s age than self-reported information.
According to Roblox, the rollout will be followed by new safety tools aimed at keeping children from interacting with unfamiliar adults. The company noted that it has already introduced more than 100 safety features since January 2025, among them “Roblox Sentinel,” an open-source AI tool built to detect potential risks of child exploitation early on.

While the statement did not provide a launch timeline or address how the company will handle privacy concerns, it emphasized Roblox’s intent to set an industry benchmark for child protection. “We hope this move sets a standard that other gaming, social media, and communication platforms follow,” the company wrote.
The initiative also ensures compliance with the UK’s recently enacted Online Safety Act.
Roblox has faced mounting political and public pressure over child-safety lapses. A 2024 Bloomberg investigation highlighted cases of predators targeting minors on the platform, prompting U.S. Congressman Ro Khanna to push a petition in August urging tougher protections.

Earlier this year, CEO and co-founder David Baszucki faced backlash after telling parents that if they had concerns, they should simply not allow their children to play Roblox. The remark drew sharp criticism and reinforced calls for the company to take greater responsibility.
