Sony is reportedly planning to hold another State of Play event as early as next week.
The last full-fledged State of Play was held in June, although Sony has since aired smaller, game-specific showcases — the most recent being a deep dive into 007: First Light, the upcoming James Bond title from Hitman developer IO Interactive.
If true, this would mark the second major presentation in just a few weeks, hinting that Sony has plenty left to reveal before the end of September. According to NateTheHate, a source with a reliable track record (as reported by Insider Gaming), a new State of Play is imminent. While no date has been officially confirmed, past events have typically been announced early in the week and streamed midweek, usually on a Wednesday or Thursday.
What games are expected
Speculation is running high on what Sony might showcase. Fans are especially eager for new footage of Marvel’s Wolverine, the long-awaited superhero title from Insomniac Games that hasn’t been seen since its announcement trailer in 2021. Insider Gaming had previously reported that Wolverine would appear in a State of Play by the end of the month, and this new rumor seems to back up that claim.
However, industry watchers don’t expect the event to focus solely on Wolverine. Other anticipated titles include Naughty Dog’s mysterious Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and Bungie’s upcoming Marathon reboot. Rumors also continue to swirl that Insomniac is secretly developing a Venom spin-off game, potentially in the vein of Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
While Sony has yet to make anything official, the convergence of multiple reports suggests that fans could soon be treated to another round of trailers, gameplay reveals, and surprise announcements.
State of Play is a recurring digital program created by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) to highlight upcoming titles and announcements across the PlayStation ecosystem. These broadcasts cover games for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and the PlayStation VR and VR2 platforms, offering trailers, gameplay reveals, developer interviews, and updates on new hardware. The format serves as Sony’s direct communication channel with its global player base, giving fans a first look at what’s next for the brand.
Sony debuted the State of Play series in March 2019, positioning it as a modern approach to engaging the PlayStation community. Inspired by formats like Nintendo Direct, State of Play marked a strategic shift in how Sony promotes its games, choosing digital broadcasts over large-scale industry events such as E3. This move allows Sony to control the timing, presentation, and messaging of its announcements, ensuring consistent and targeted communication with players throughout the year.
