Epic Games has issued a wave of bans against thousands of Fortnite players who misused the game’s recently introduced proximity voice chat feature, sparking debate across the gaming community.
The bans were announced on Fortnite’s official update channel on Twitter, where Epic confirmed that a significant number of players had been caught using the feature to spread insults, hate speech, and other forms of harassment. The company urged players to report toxic interactions using the in-game reporting system, even sharing a step-by-step guide to ensure evidence is properly submitted. Epic promised to review reported cases and enforce penalties where necessary.

The controversy surrounds Fortnite’s newest limited-time mode, Delulu, which launched on September 19. The mode offers a unique twist on the traditional battle royale format. Instead of jumping off the iconic Battle Bus, 80 players spawn solo and can form squads of up to four using proximity chat. Players can also betray or abandon their squads mid-match, creating unpredictable alliances and rivalries.
While the feature was intended to encourage collaboration and spontaneity, some players have reported that it has instead become a breeding ground for toxicity. Social media platforms, including Reddit and Twitter, are filled with mixed reactions. Some players praised the mode for creating “fun and relaxing” matches with cooperative teammates, while others described certain lobbies as “toxic hellzones,” particularly those with younger players.

Several women gamers reported being targeted with misogynistic comments or deliberately hunted down after speaking in voice chat. The reports have reignited discussions about safety tools and moderation in online multiplayer games.
Despite the controversy, Epic Games confirmed that Delulu mode will return from September 26 to 29, giving players another chance to try it out. Winners during the limited run will unlock Crashbella — a colorful new glider shaped like an umbrella with a heart on top.
