Halo: Combat Evolved Remake reportedly in development by Virtuos, developer of Oblivion Remastered

The remake is said to use a hybrid engine combining Halo: Reach mechanics with Unreal Engine 5 visuals and may even release on PlayStation for the first time in franchise history. The leak surfaces ahead of the Halo World Championship announcement later this month, as the Halo franchise regains momentum with its Netflix series and new Halo Infinite updates.

A remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, the game that started Master Chief’s legendary journey, is reportedly in development, according to new leaks ahead of the upcoming Halo World Championship event later this month.

As per reports from Rebs Gaming and Xbox Era, the project is being led by Virtuos, the studio behind The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, with its subsidiary Abstraction handling much of the development alongside Halo Studios. The remake is said to be built using a hybrid engine that combines the Halo: Reach engine for core gameplay mechanics with Unreal Engine 5 for upgraded visuals and effects.

While details remain unofficial, sources suggest this version could mark the first Halo title to release on PlayStation, though Microsoft has not confirmed this.

Abstraction is no stranger to the Halo franchise, having previously contributed accessibility features to Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which included Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary—the 2011 remaster that allowed players to toggle between modern and classic graphics.

Microsoft has already teased multiple Halo projects in development. During last year’s Halo World Championship, the company showcased A New Dawn, a trailer confirming future Halo titles would utilize Unreal Engine technology, including the mysterious Project Foundry.

The rumored remake comes as Halo experiences renewed momentum. The Halo TV series recently surged into Netflix’s Top 10 shows, and Halo Infinite added Invasion, a fan-favorite multiplayer mode originally featured in Halo: Reach.
