Roblox banned in Qatar. Here’s what happened

Qatar has banned Roblox over concerns about child safety, cultural values, and online misconduct. Authorities cite risks from life-like virtual interactions, while reports also allege incidents of virtual sexual assaults and violations of local traditions. The move follows similar past bans, such as Turkey’s temporary Roblox restriction, and comes amid growing scrutiny of the platform’s moderation policies. Roblox has yet to respond, leaving its future in Qatar uncertain.

Roblox, one of the world’s most popular online gaming platforms, has been officially banned in Qatar. The decision comes amid a long-running global debate over the game’s safety and security practices, which have faced repeated criticism. Concerns about inappropriate interactions and child safety have fueled public outrage in the past, even prompting vigilante actions by figures such as YouTuber Schlep — who was recently banned himself.

According to the Qatar Tribune, the ban means players in the country can no longer access Roblox, even though the app remains available for download on iOS and Android. Any internet connection detected within Qatar is now blocked from logging in.

Regional outlet Al Sharq reports that Qatari authorities acted to “protect children and teenagers,” describing Roblox as an “open digital space” where minors engage in life-like interactions. AI researcher Bahaa Al Ahmad warned of the risks, while other sources point to additional factors.

An Arabic-language tweet from Al Jasra alleges the ban was also linked to recorded incidents of “virtual sexual assaults” and “violations of religious values, customs, and traditions.” In a socially conservative country like Qatar, such cultural and moral concerns carry significant weight in policymaking.

Roblox Corporation has yet to issue an official statement, leaving uncertainty over whether negotiations — similar to those that led Turkey to lift its own Roblox ban last year — might follow. With more than 380 million monthly users and an average of 111.8 million daily players sending 6.1 billion messages and logging 1.1 million hours of voice chat in 28 languages, the platform remains a giant in the gaming world.

Still, the timing of this ban adds to growing scrutiny of Roblox’s moderation policies, especially after the company recently moved to remove vigilante groups from its platform.
