Final Fantasy XIV may not be supported on PlayStation 4 for much longer, according to recent comments from director and producer Naoki Yoshida, widely known as Yoshi-P.

In a conversation with Feed4Gamers, Yoshida was asked whether the MMORPG would continue to run on Sony’s last-generation console, given that several other titles have already dropped PS4 support. While he didn’t give a definitive yes or no, he acknowledged that the system is approaching its technical ceiling.

Yoshida explained that Final Fantasy XIV’s development has been pushing against the PS4’s hardware limits for some time. Sony previously allowed Square Enix to expand certain system restrictions, particularly regarding data capacity, but Yoshida revealed that the company has now reached the maximum possible allowance. This means future updates—such as major expansions or version 8.5—may no longer be feasible on PS4.

Although Yoshida stressed that the development team aims to keep the game accessible across as many platforms as possible, he admitted that the console’s aging technology will eventually force them to discontinue support. Importantly, he promised that if such a decision is made, players will receive a clear explanation directly from him before any changes take effect.

Yoshida also hinted that discussions about bringing the MMORPG to Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 have been positive, suggesting another potential platform in the future.

With the PS4 showing its age, players upgrading to modern systems will not only ensure continued access but also experience the game’s world with improved graphics and performance.
