A new leak suggests that Valve could be eyeing 2028 for the launch of the Steam Deck 2. While the first Steam Deck made a big splash in the handheld gaming market, official updates about its successor have been few and far between. In the meantime, competition in the portable PC space has only intensified, with new devices entering the scene from multiple companies.
Valve’s hardware history has been mixed, but the Steam Deck proved to be a breakthrough moment. It wasn’t the first handheld gaming PC, but it played a major role in popularizing the category, sparking rival devices from brands like ASUS and Lenovo. However, following the reveal of Nintendo’s Switch 2 and Xbox’s handheld announcements, Steam Deck sales have cooled. Even so, Valve appears to be in no rush to release the next iteration.
The speculation comes from well-known gaming hardware leaker KeplerL2, who claimed on a NeoGAF thread that the Steam Deck 2 is likely scheduled for 2028. That would put its launch six years after the original model and five years after the OLED refresh. The long wait aligns with Valve’s earlier statements that a true sequel would only arrive once they could deliver a “generational leap” in performance without compromising battery life.
Adding to the speculation, another leaker, Moore’s Law Is Dead, has suggested Sony might launch its own handheld tied to the PS6 around late 2027 or early 2028. If accurate, Valve’s next Deck could end up competing directly with Sony’s offering rather than with Microsoft’s incoming handhelds. Still, neither Valve nor Sony has confirmed any official release windows.
As for what this so-called generational leap could include, details remain uncertain. Patents filed by Valve in 2024 hinted at potential upgrades, such as stronger streaming capabilities and VR integration. Whether those features make it into the Steam Deck 2—or appear in a different model beforehand—remains to be seen. For now, fans may have a long wait before any concrete announcements surface.
