Age of Empires 4, originally released as an Xbox console exclusive, is officially making its way to the PlayStation 5 on November 4, 2025. The announcement was revealed during Gamescom 2025, marking another milestone in the growing trend of cross-platform availability for once tightly held exclusives.
In recent years, the walls between Xbox and PlayStation ecosystems have started to crumble. Although both companies still maintain signature titles, collaborations and crossovers are becoming more common. This year alone, PlayStation is receiving Gears of War: Reloaded, while Xbox players are preparing to dive into Helldivers 2. Just a few years ago, such exchanges would have been almost unimaginable, particularly given that Age of Empires 4 is published under Xbox Game Studios.

The PS5 launch of Age of Empires 4 comes more than four years after its original debut, following a similar pattern to Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition, which arrived on PlayStation earlier this year—six years after its PC release. For many fans, this delay may feel long overdue, but it still represents a big win for the PlayStation community.
Alongside the platform expansion, Microsoft also revealed a new content update: Age of Empires 4: Dynasties of the East. The expansion introduces Variant Civilizations and The Crucible, a single-player rogue-lite mode designed to provide fresh gameplay challenges. Both the expansion and the PS5 version will launch on the same day, ensuring players across all platforms can dive into the new features simultaneously.
While rumors suggest the franchise could eventually transition to Unreal Engine 5, no official word has surfaced yet. Given the lengthy wait between Age of Empires 3 and 4, fans may not see a sequel soon—but with new expansions and broader availability, Age of Empires 4 is far from slowing down.
