Xbox’s iconic game, the Gears of War, is coming to Playstation soon. However, it many not be a full game, according to a leakster.
The PS5 release of Gears of War: Reloaded is significant for multiple reasons. Not only does it mark the first time one of Xbox’s most iconic franchises appears on Sony hardware, but at launch, the physical edition will be exclusive to PlayStation 5. Neither Xbox Game Studios nor developer The Coalition has announced disc versions for Xbox or PC. While that gives PlayStation owners something special, there may be a catch.

The recent leak suggests that the physical PlayStation 5 edition of Gears of War: Reloaded may not ship with the full game on its disc. As the industry leans increasingly toward digital-first releases, many players who still prefer physical media often expect a complete experience in the box. However, just as with several high-profile titles before it, this remaster might still demand a download even if you buy the disc.
According to reports cited by PPE.pl, the PS5 disc only includes the campaign portion of the game, with additional content requiring an online download. Images of the box seem to confirm this, showing a disclaimer reading “requires content download.” This wouldn’t be unprecedented—other recent releases, such as Doom: The Dark Ages, shipped with extremely limited data on-disc. In that case, some Xbox discs carried just 328 MB, while PS5 copies had only 85 MB. If Reloaded’s full campaign is indeed included on disc, it won’t be as extreme as Doom, but it still raises concerns about what “physical” ownership really means today.

For PS5 players who hoped to avoid downloads or who prefer the permanence of physical media, the news may be a letdown. That said, the PlayStation version does offer system-specific advantages. The game will support the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, and it includes upgrades tailored for the PS5 Pro.
Even with this disc controversy, Gears of War: Reloaded represents a landmark moment in gaming. Launching on August 26, it lands on PS5 the very same day Helldivers 2 arrives on Xbox—a symbolic moment in the long-running console rivalry. With Microsoft and Sony increasingly willing to share their flagship franchises across platforms, the traditional idea of exclusivity in console gaming appears to be fading.
