GTA 6 dubbed the first-ever “AAAAA” game. Here’s why it matters

Rockstar’s GTA 6, set to release on May 26, 2026, is being dubbed the world’s first “AAAAA” game, a tongue-in-cheek label highlighting its unmatched scope, cultural influence, and massive budget. Industry experts predict record-breaking sales of up to 85 million copies and revenue of $7.6 billion within 60 days, with the game priced around $80. Beyond its blockbuster scale, GTA 6 is expected to embrace user-generated content, setting a new benchmark for the gaming industry.

When we talk about big-budget video games, the term AAA usually comes to mind—titles with sky-high production costs, sprawling worlds, and massive marketing pushes. Think GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us Part II, or God of War: Ragnarok. These are the benchmarks of premium gaming.

But now, Rockstar’s upcoming GTA 6 is being cheekily labeled something beyond even that: a “AAAAA” game. The phrase came from Devolver Digital co-founder Nigel Lowrie, who explained in an interview with IGN that GTA stands in a league of its own.

“There are AAA games, there are AAAA games, and then there’s GTA—it’s the AAAAA game,” Lowrie said, pointing to its unprecedented scope, cultural impact, and the global attention it demands.

Why the hype around GTA 6?

The upcoming release has already been called the biggest launch in gaming history. Industry analysts expect it to shatter sales records, with projections suggesting it could generate nearly $7.6 billion in revenue within just two months of launch. Josh Chapman of Konvoy even predicted sales of around 85 million copies in that same window.

The game is also rumored to lean heavily on user-generated content (UGC), potentially opening new revenue streams for mod creators and players alike.

As for pricing, reports suggest GTA 6 could retail at around $80, slightly higher than the usual $69.99 for standard AAA titles on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S.

GTA 6 Release Date

After much anticipation, Rockstar confirmed earlier this year that GTA 6 will launch on May 26, 2026. The release was pushed back from its initial late-2025 target, and while some speculate another delay might happen given the project’s massive scale, others believe Rockstar will hit the announced date.

In short, the “AAAAA” tag isn’t just a joke—it’s a reflection of how GTA 6 aims to set a new benchmark for blockbuster games.
