It seems the next generation of gaming consoles is arriving sooner than expected. Reports suggest that both Sony and Microsoft are preparing to unveil their next major consoles by 2027. According to leaks and industry insiders, Sony’s upcoming console—likely to be called the PlayStation 6 (PS6)—may take a different approach from its competitor, prioritizing affordability over raw performance.
Recently, PlayStation’s lead system architect Mark Cerny hinted that the company’s next hardware project is already well underway and could debut within the next couple of years. Following his remarks, trusted leaker KeplerL2 claimed that Sony is targeting a 2027 launch for the PS6, with plans already firmly in motion unless unexpected delays occur.
Meanwhile, reports from the YouTube channel Moore’s Law Is Dead, known for accurately leaking PS5 Pro details, indicate that the PS6 will be less powerful than Microsoft’s next Xbox. However, this difference in performance might allow Sony to price its console more competitively—a move that could appeal strongly to gamers frustrated by rising hardware costs.
Microsoft is also rumored to release its next console around the same time, setting up another head-to-head launch similar to the 2020 releases of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. In an era where console prices have continued to climb rather than drop, affordability could play a decisive role in the upcoming console war.
While Xbox may maintain a technical edge and continue to leverage its Game Pass ecosystem, Sony’s strategy of offering a lower-priced system might attract a wider audience—especially casual players who see little difference in power between the two consoles. If Sony successfully executes this pricing strategy, the PS6 could dominate sales and reshape the competitive balance between PlayStation and Xbox once again.
