After years of anticipation, Hollow Knight: Silksong is finally arriving. Developer Team Cherry has confirmed the long-awaited sequel will launch worldwide on September 4, 2025, bringing an end to years of speculation about whether the project would ever see the light of day.
Global Release Times
Silksong will go live at the following times on September 4:
7 AM PT
10 AM ET
4 PM CEST
11 PM JST
The game will be priced at $20 across all platforms, with owners of the original Switch version getting a free upgrade to Switch 2.
What to Expect
Silksong is the follow-up to the 2017 hit Hollow Knight, which sold over 15 million copies and received widespread acclaim. Initially planned as a DLC expansion, the project grew so large in scope that it evolved into a full standalone title. Players will take on the role of Hornet, navigating a vast 2D world filled with new enemies, massive bosses, and areas such as the sprawling Greymoor, one of Team Cherry’s most ambitious creations yet.
Why the Wait Took So Long
The game’s extended development cycle raised concerns among fans, but Team Cherry insists Silksong was never in “development hell.” Co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen explained that the studio’s small size, combined with the runaway success of the original Hollow Knight, allowed them to work at their own pace.
According to Gibson, the challenge was less about setbacks and more about creative overflow: “At one point, I realized every sketch I made had to become part of the game. If I didn’t stop drawing, it would take 15 years to finish.”
The team also chose to avoid frequent progress updates. As Pellen put it, “Instead of popping up to say the same thing over and over, we felt it was our responsibility to just focus on making the game.”
Game Pass Availability
At launch, Silksong will be included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, meaning subscribers can play it across console and PC without an extra purchase. However, it’s not yet clear whether the title will appear on Game Pass’s lower-tier plans.
Meanwhile, 2017’s Hollow Knight remains available on both Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra, though there is currently no indication Silksong will be added to Sony’s subscription service. Nintendo, likewise, does not typically include third-party titles in Switch Online at release.
Hype at Gamescom
Silksong recently reemerged at Gamescom in Germany, where it drew massive lines of attendees eager for a hands-on session. Early impressions suggest the sequel successfully builds on its predecessor’s formula, delivering fresh mechanics while retaining the distinctive art and design philosophies that defined the original.
A Cult Classic Grows
While not a mainstream AAA blockbuster, Silksong has generated enormous anticipation. In fact, its upcoming release has already influenced the broader industry, with several developers delaying their own projects to avoid launching against it.
After years of silence and speculation, fans finally have an answer: Hollow Knight: Silksong lands September 4, 2025—and it looks ready to meet the towering expectations set by its predecessor.
