Nintendo and Illumination have revealed that the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie will officially be titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The announcement came in September 2025, confirming that the new film will arrive in theaters on April 3, 2026 — nearly three years after the original became a global box office hit with over $1 billion in earnings.
What is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie about?
While an official plot summary has not been shared, the title points directly to the 2007 Nintendo Wii game Super Mario Galaxy. In the game, Mario explores outer space, jumping across planets and galaxies to save Princess Peach from Bowser. Players also encounter unique challenges like dodging asteroids and fighting new enemies, with Luigi becoming a playable character once the main story is complete.

The studios have not confirmed whether the movie will introduce new characters like Rosalina, but fans are already speculating about how far the film will expand Mario’s universe.
Who is in the cast?
Most of the original cast will return for the sequel. Chris Pratt is back as Mario, alongside Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
The first movie’s directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, are also returning to lead the project. Additional cast members and new characters are expected to be revealed later.

Is there a trailer yet?
A full trailer has not been released. However, a short teaser dropped in September 2025 to announce the title. The 51-second video showed a butterfly floating through Mushroom Kingdom, passing Mario, Luigi, and other familiar characters, before heading into space above Peach’s castle.
When will it release?
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled to hit theaters on April 3, 2026. This release comes almost exactly three years after The Super Mario Bros. Movie opened in April 2023.
